In this very useful business book, author Verne Harnish shares the business lessons to be learned from case studies of some very different organisations.

Harnish also acknowledges that he learned three crucial lessons from Chernow’s biography, Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr.

(1) Priorities

Does your organisation have objective Top-5 priorities for the year and the quarter, and a clear Top-1 priority along with an appropriate strategic theme?

(2) Data

Does your organisation have sufficient & relevant data on a weekly and – yes – daily basis to provide insight into how the concern is running and what the market is demanding?

(3) Rhythm

Does the organisation have an effective rhythm of daily, weekly, quarterly, and annual meetings to maintain alignment and drive accountability?

These three questions suggest issues that leaders in any organisation should address regularly with rigor and candor.

Relevance and Differentiation

Adopting the habits of extremely successful growth companies, you must ensure that (a) everything you do is of great importance to your current and prospective customers, and (b) everything you do will differentiate your organisation from your competitors.

 

Not Just For Entrepreneurs and Young Companies

Harnish’s book appears to be written primarly for young companies or start-ups, though we’d argue that the lessons on entrepreneurship and strategy can be applied to any business.

Daily Meetings – Or Maybe Not

We like the idea of maintaining accountability, but we’re not entirely convinced that daily meetings for all teams makes universal sense for all organisations in all situations.

Overall, however, this is a very practical and action-oriented business book, it offers many examples of real-world situations, insights and suggestions that you can put to immediate use. There are strategies and tools that you can adopt, adapt, and implement in your own organisation.
